Los Angeles, Calif. (February 8, 2011) - A new rock ‘n’ roll documentary asks whether the “father of Christian rock music” was nothing more than a contemporary Elmer Gantry, a musical flim-flam man out to con the faithful.
Larry Norman, who died in early 2008, was something of a “rock ‘n’ roll Billy Graham” figure, the most vibrant musical performer to shake, rattle and roll church pews during a hip countercultural revival of religion known as the “Jesus movement.” Casting a prophet-like presence and with lyrics that cut to the marrow, Norman became the voice of a generation of young Christians trying to make sense of their faith amidst the chaos of the 1960s. With songs such as “I Wish We’d All Been Ready” and “Why Should the Devil Have All the Good Music?” Larry Norman is remembered as one of the most powerful communicators of the Christian gospel through rock music.
Over time however, Norman’s crafted image began to overtake him and the line between fact and fiction became blurred. Randy Stonehill – who played Keith Richards to Larry Norman’s Mick Jagger persona – recounts, “I watched him grasp for hope at first, but then slowly lose grip on those fundamental principles.”
It is through the testimonies of Stonehill and other members of the Solid Rock Records family that the true story of this enigmatic figure unfolds for the first time.
To remember the legendary rock musician and to chronicle his life story, Church Speak presents “The Fallen Angel Film & Music Tour” which will be visiting 10 cities in the U.S. and Canada from February – April, 2011. Cities include Surrey, Toronto, Nashville, Los Angeles, Windsor, Denver and Portland with more cities to follow.
At the screening tour events, a special premiere theatrical screening of the documentary “FALLEN ANGEL: The OUTLAW LARRY NORMAN” will be shown in addition to music by Norman’s best friend, Randy Stonehill and a Q&A with the film’s Emmy-nominated director, David Di Sabatino.
The evening will be an opportunity to witness a glimmer of grace against a backdrop of moral failure. A study in polar contrasts, Larry Norman's story presents the viewer with a complex character grappling with the price of genius, the struggle made all the more difficult because Norman chose to make his mark within a religious subculture struggling to define its place within the world.
Too religious for the rock 'n' rollers but too rock 'n' roll for the religious crowd, Larry Norman is the perpetual outsider, ultimately imploding under the weight of trying to fuse his position as the musical voice of the Jesus movement with his desire for '70s rock superstar status.
Told mainly from the perspective of those who worked with him during the height of his success, viewers will feel the power of the music he created as refracted through the inconsistencies of the life he led. For the first time, some of the most revered names in the Christian rock music world speak openly about a man whose name elicits polarized reactions. Is he simply misunderstood, or is he a musical con artist? “FALLEN ANGEL: The OUTLAW LARRY NORMAN” is the story of this walking contradiction; partly fact and partly fiction.
